Tips for Skin Care in Alaska in the Winter
Winter is in full effect here in Alaska! Winters in Alaska are long and cold, but we at Alaska Family Dermatology love it, like you! Whether sitting by the fire or adventuring outdoors, the winter can affect our skin. Here are a few tips to keep your skin healthy and happy in the winter.
Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is important for healthy skin. The cold weather, fires, and our home/office heating systems can cause a lack of humidity in the air. Maintaining a proper intake of water can help keep your body balanced. We also recommend a routine of skin moisturization. Keep an eye out for any irritation or red areas, and consult our dermatologist if your issues persist.
Humidify Your Environment
Along with staying hydrated, creating a space with humidity can help with many skin conditions in the winter. Low humidity affects the skin’s natural moisture barrier, which can lead to flaking, cracking, and peeling. A humidifier in the bedroom and living space can help maintain the moisture your body needs.
Don’t Forget the Sunscreen!
Cold weather can sometimes make us drop our guard against the sun. Sunscreen is still needed to protect sensitive skin from the sun, even if there is little sun to be seen here in Alaska!
